I am a self-employed home contractor in Ontario, and in my downtime between projects I started writing this blog to share my advice and opinion on products, projects, and trends in the industry. The aim is to help homeowners who are do-it-yourselfers as well as other contractors looking for help.
I do not sell anything through this site, no products or services, as that is not the purpose of this site. My goal is to connect with others who have a passion for renovations and home projects, regardless of their experience or profession.
Smart Home Improvement Projects
If you don't have a lot of money, or want to undertake a home improvement project that will have long-term benefits for your home, here's a little guide to help. There are some projects, big and small, that usually provide more of a boost either to your home's value, to your savings on your bills, or to your own enjoyment. Here's a quick list:
Repairing or replacing your roof is only something you'll have to do every 15 to 25 years. It might be more expensive upfront than other projects, but it is a project that has the most direct and long-term benefits to homeowners. First, a nice looking roof is one of the biggest boosts to your home's curb appeal should you ever want to sell it. Second, if your roof is in poor shape it could cost you a lot in future repairs and on your energy bill.
Furnace & Air Conditioner
Whether you're doing routine maintenance, replacing your air filters, or replacing your furnace or air conditioner with new systems, this is another type of project that you might not have to do very often but can provide great long-term savings. Older systems are less efficient and can soak up costly repairs, where new and modern systems help lower your energy bill and provide better, healthier air quality for your home.
The kitchen is one of the rooms you will spend a lot of time in, and nothing is more frustrating than having to deal with a crappy kitchen. Old appliances, illogical layouts, not enough counter or cupboard space...it can drive you up the wall. Having a sleek new kitchen set up the way you've always wanted feels GOOD, and kitchen renovations also provide one of the biggest boosts to your home's value.
